Conditions of entry into Germany for Ukrainian citizens who do not apply for asylum

1. Visa

Not required. Citizens of Ukraine can enter Germany without visa and biometric passport.

2. Documents

Requirements for a biometric passport or (if you do not have a biometric passport) visas for entry into Germany have been revoked for all those who enter Germany after 24.02.2022 and:

  • was in Ukraine until February 24, 2022 (citizens and non-citizens);
  • is a citizen of Ukraine;
  • is a refugee who has received such status in Ukraine.
Note

Such conditions will be valid until May 23, 2022. Prior to this date, persons who have entered Germany without any visa or other documents will be required to contact the local Aliens Authority (“Ausländerbehörde”) and apply for a residence permit. This can be done by requesting temporary protection (see below).

3. Is it possible for children to cross the border unaccompanied by their parents? Is it possible for children to cross the border accompanied by non-member adults?

Yes, they are allowed to cross the border, but they have to register immediately, and the authorities will help. If you are accompanying children who are not members of your family, you should contact your local children’s authority immediately.

4. Information about Covid-19

Formally, you need a negative test for Covid-19, a certificate of vaccination or a certificate of recovery. However, compliance with this requirement is not currently being monitored by the police. You may be asked to take a border crossing test.

5. Green card

Not required.

6. Documents on pets

You do not currently need pet documents. However, it is recommended that you bring all the documents you have. Upon arrival in Germany, you should visit your local veterinarian to make sure your pet has all the necessary vaccinations.

7. How long are you allowed to stay and the territory of the country

90 days, then you will need to apply for temporary protection
(see below).

8. Do I need to register somewhere?

You are not required to register, but everyone is encouraged to register upon entry. You can register with your local police or foreigner’s office (Ausländerbehörde). Especially if you do not have a visa or biometric passport, and if you need financial support or housing assistance. You can find the appropriate local authority here. If you have a visa or biometric passport and you do not need financial or any other assistance, you only need to register in 90 days. The police are usually present at the stations where trains arrive from the respective neighboring countries, and will be happy to help with check-in.
